What is OPG X-Ray?

An OPG X-Ray (Orthopantomogram) is a 2D scan of the lower face, that provides a wide or panoramic view of all teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film, including teeth that have not erupted or surfaced yet, such as the wisdom teeth. It offers a complete view of jawbone and the temporomandibular joint which connects the jaw to the rest of the skull. Short blasts of low-level radiation is used to create images of bones and teeth.

OPG X-Ray Procedure

To get an OPG X-ray, the patient is supposed to rest their chin on a shelf in front of the OPG X-ray machine, while softly biting on a sterile mouthpiece. This ensures that the head and mouth of the patient remain steady while the OPG X-ray machine takes images of the lower face.

The OPG X-ray machine consists of a rotating arm which has the X-ray source attached to it on one end, and the film mechanism on the opposite side, that captures the images. The arm rotates around the patient’s head and captures a panoramic view of the jaw and mouth.

The procedure is quick and does not involve any pain or discomfort. The patient can easily continue their daily routine after the OPG X-ray.

Purpose of OPG X-Ray

An OPG X-ray is used by the dentists for:

  • Detecting cavities within teeth.
  • Viewing all teeth of the patient and determining their position, number, and growth- including the teeth that have not erupted yet.
  • Planning orthodontic treatment.
  • Assessing the development or detecting the presence of wisdom teeth which may be impacted.
  • Examining the jawbone.
  • Having general overview of dental health of the patient.

OPG X-Ray Results

OPG X-rays are easy, convenient, and fast, and can assist in diagnosing oral conditions at an early stage. Early detection allows timely treatment and hence successful and quick recovery from dental disorders. For example, OPG X-ray results can help in diagnosing cavities within teeth, loss of bone, changes in root canal, infection, cysts or tumors and other problems that can silently develop and get worse before surfacing.

OPG X-Ray Side Effects

Dental X-rays deliver very small doses of radiations, as compared to other X-rays. Hence, they are considered safe, and are usually essential for maintaining oral health. OPG X-rays allow dentists to see areas between the teeth that cannot be seen otherwise- for instance, they can indicate decay between the teeth before it gets advanced.

Although it is still controversial, some of the rare OPG X-Ray side effects include an increased risk of breast cancer, brain cancer, thyroid cancer, and tumors of parotid gland.
