Understanding Migraine:

Migraine is one of the most common headache syndrome affecting people. It is a debilitating headache which often results in poor quality of life. The most important fact about migraine is that it is a controllable rather than a curable disease. So understanding migraine is very important. It helps you to schedule your routines in a way that allows optimal functionality with minimum attacks of Migraine.

Migraine headaches are typical headaches that can last for anywhere between a couple of hours to a couple of days. People who suffer from migraine headaches experience pain in a characteristic pattern around the head. Some patients also have additional symptoms like vomiting, seeing strange visual patterns, changes in hearing and sensitivity to light and sound, mood changes etc. Migraine episodes that have either or all of these additional symptoms are known as migraines with ‘aura’. In addition to migraines with and without aura, there are some other categories of migraine headaches as well.

Knowing your Migraine trigger is one of the most important part of migraine treatment. Some of the common Migraine Triggers are:

  • Improper sleep.
  • Bright flashing lights.
  • Loud sound.
  • Strong odors.
  • Stress
  • Weather changes
  • Some food items (Nut, Cheese, Chocolate, Alcohol, Artificial sweeteners etc.).
  • Excessive use of coffee.
  • Certain medications like Birth control pills.
  • Dehydration.
  • During menstrual Periods in women.

Proper awareness is the key to proper treatment. Using pain killers alone for treatment of migraine often does not work. There are other medication used to control migraine. These prophylactic drugs reduce the number, intensity and duration of attacks. You can also use a headache diary to chart your migraine headaches.
