What is Anomaly Scan?

An anomaly scan, also known as mid-pregnancy scan, is a detailed scan usually carried out between 19 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. The anomaly scan checks the physical development of the baby- however, it cannot detect every condition.

Anomaly Scan Weeks

An anomaly scan is also known as 20th week scan, and anomaly scan weeks range from 19th to 22nd week. It is carried out in the same way as the 12th week scan and helps in detecting any abnormalities in the fetus.

What does Anomaly Scan Detect?

An anomaly scan investigates baby’s heart, bones, spinal cord, brain, kidneys, face, and abdomen- in detail. The sonographer can detect several rare conditions in the fetus, and parents are then presented with the possible treatment options. These conditions include:

  • Open spina bifida– a condition that affects spine.
  • Anencephaly– a birth defect in which baby is born without parts of skull and brain.
  • Exomphalos– a defect of tummy wall (abdominal wall) in which the abdominal wall does not fully develop in mother’s womb.
  • Cleft lip– a condition in which the tissue making the lip fails to join completely before baby’s birth.
  • Gastroschisis– a birth defect in which the baby’s intestines extend outside the body, because of the hole in abdominal wall (belly) beside belly button.
  • Diaphragmatic hernia– birth defect with a hole in diaphragm (large muscle separating chest from abdomen). This results in abdominal organs (including stomach, intestines, and liver) moving through the hole in diaphragm and entering baby’s chest.
  • Lethal skeletal dysplasia– severe disorder of bone growth, resulting in unusually short toes and fingers, very short legs, and arms, underdeveloped pelvic bones, flattened spiral bones and abnormal curvature of lower back. Mostly, fetus does not survive to full term due to the health problems.
  • Serious cardiac abnormalities– defects in formation or functioning of the heart.
  • Bilateral renal agenesis– a rare condition in which one or both kidneys fail to develop completely.
  • Patau’s syndrome, or T13– causes an incorrect number of chromosomes, leading to physical abnormalities in multiple body parts, combined with intellectual abnormalities.
  • Edwards’ syndrome, or T18– it means that the baby has 3 copies of chromosome 18, instead of two. The condition causes multiple health problems and physical defects, and the babies are usually born very frail and small.

Difference between 2D and 3D/ 4D Anomaly scan

A 2D scan produces a flat, black, and white image, of the side of the baby. However, it does investigate all the functioning of baby’s internal organs- which is essential for monitoring fetal health. On the other hand, 3D and 4D images provide more details of internal as well as external organs, from all angles. The internal details include heart wall, blood flow in different vessels and the valves, while the external features include skin and shape of mouth. Sometimes, the parents can also see their child yawning or smiling.
